Welcome to my online blog for our Vineyard Life Journal!
This forum IS NOT for debate or to correct each other, but to share our insights and observations. (Actually, I will be keeping a pretty tight rein on the comments section, and I will have the ability to block trolls, spammers or those who just want to stir the pot.)
Before you comment or read what I have posted, read today’s passages for yourself and complete your own S.O.A.P. exercise… (If you read mine first, it may taint what you think.)

Here is my SOAP for today, Friday, November 23, 2018
Matthew 14:25 “Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” 29 “Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
Matthew 15:8 “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me” (Jesus quoting Isaiah).
Matthew 16:11 “But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
13 “When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered,
“You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.”
We are digesting three years of Jesus’ teaching in about a week’s time… It’s a lot to take in.
There are two ways I could go today:
- “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me”
- “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
I don’t want to be a person who merely gives “lip service” in worship. I want both my mouth and heart to be engaged (along with my hands and my heart!) I know at times my heart is far away in worship, giving my attention to the sound, the temperature in the room, or even where I want to go for lunch… There are so many distractions.
But then I think of Peter… with all of his shortcomings, he answers correctly when Jesus asks who he thinks he (Jesus) is… “You are the Messiah (the Christ), the Son of the living God.”
None of us are perfect. We all have our shortcomings. We all have our distractions. And I have good reasons for some of my distractions, and I alone own the rest…
But I know this, Jesus is the Messiah… the Christ… the Son of the living God!
THAT is worth all my attention!
Lord help me to always engage both my head and my heart in worship…
