As I was starting my blog today, it just hit me that today is day 40 of our journey!
There is something significant about “40 days” in the Bible.
I just felt like this was a significant milestone for us… Here’s why… Here are just a few examples from the Bible regarding references to “40 days and 40 nights.”
When Noah and his family entered the ark, it rained 40 days and 40 nights. (Genesis 7)
When Moses went up Mount Sinai, he was there for 40 days and 40 nights. (Exodus 24)
Jesus was in the wilderness 40 days and 40 nights. (Matthew 4)
Goliath taunted the armies of Israel 40 days and 40 nights. (1 Samuel 17)
Elijah fled Jezebel 40 days and 40 nights to Mount Horeb. (1 Kings 19:8)
There was even 40 days between Jesus’ resurrection and his ascension, when he appeared to many people! (Acts 1)
(There are also many references to 40 years… such as Moses tending sheep 40 years until he was sent to Egypt to free the Israelites, then they wandered in the wilderness 40 years until they entered the Promised Land.)
I’m not trying to make more out of the “40 days and 40 nights” than is warranted, I just know that it’s significant in the Bible and I wanted us all to pause and think about that for a moment.
Congratulations on our first 40 days!
P.S. There is some debate as to whether “40 days and 40 nights” was actually meant EXACTLY “40 days and 40 nights” or if it just simply meant “a really long time” as we might say, “It took FOREVER to get our food!” It didn’t actually take forever… it just took longer than you wanted it to take…
