Every once in awhile someone will ask me about tithing… Is it an Old Testament requirement or does the New Testament also address it? Is it for today? What are the benefits of tithing? How do I start?
Jesus addressed this in Matthew 23… “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law—justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.” Matthew 23:23
There are two sides to my faith: One belief… two, practice. The Old Testament speaks directly to the blessings of tithing… “I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed. Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord Almighty. “But you ask, ‘How are we to return?’ “Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ “In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the Lord Almighty. “Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,” says the Lord Almighty.” Malachi 3: 6-12
Here are a few benefits of tithing…
- Tithing reveals the location of my heart. Jesus said where your treasure is there is your heart also…
- Tithing removes the curse.
- Tithing releases God’s blessing.
- Tithing opens the flood gates of heaven.
- Tithing prevents the enemy from stealing my finances.
- Tithing ensures a harvest.
- Tithing causes others to take notice of God’s blessings in my life.
- Tithing ensures there is not lack in the local church.
- I will be called blessed.
I started tithing soon after I came to Jesus Christ at age 17. Marcie and I have been tithing ever since. We have been through good times and difficult times and have always seen the Lord show his care and concern for us. We are so blessed!
One final thought, Have you considered estate planning? This is something you could pray about… There have been a few times in Vineyard’s history where we were left money and real estate from Vineyard members like you. Both times those gifts allowed the us to move forward. One time we were able to upgrade the whole sound technology area, and boy did it need upgrading! Thank you for your prayerful consideration in this. Feel free to contact our Business Manager, Josh Frey, and he would be happy to assist you. His email is: firstname.lastname@example.org or call 937-427-1912.
