Marcie and I are very excited to be back in town after a relaxing time in Colorado and our trip to California for the Vineyard conference. I hope to see you soon!
This weekend Caleb will be wrapping up our series from the book of James, Practical Wisdom. He will be speaking from James chapter 5, focusing on patience and prayer. James talks about the patience of a farmer, waiting for his harvest. It’s waiting… with… anticipation…
James also references Elijah, who prayed that it wouldn’t rain, and it didn’t rain for 3½ years! Then he prayed again, and it began to rain. I love that it says, “Elijah was a human, just like us.” Prayer is a powerful tool… and I want to thank you for praying with me about the heroin crisis in our city for the past several weeks. The verse I have been praying and meditating on is Isaiah 54:17, “No weapon formed against us will prevail” (#NoWeapon). I believe in the power of prayer to effect change, and I also believe in doing practical things to make a difference. That’s why we collected a special offering last weekend for our Tools for School campaign. That’s also why we read to and tutor kids at our Hope and Discovery Center. It takes both prayer AND action to change things.
I also want to thank you for your generosity! Last week’s offering for Tools for School was almost $9,000 allowing us to provide school supplies (and shoes!) for over SIX HUNDRED KIDS at our Back to School Fest coming up Sunday, August 6th from 5-7P. You can still give toward this effort… (The more money that comes in, the more kids we can help, and it’s only $15 per child!) To make a contribution and to sign up to serve at our Back to School Fest CLICK HERE or go to dvc.life/tools.
This weekend (July 29th-30th) we are hosting an Open House in our Pantry. Stop by to check out our pantry after each service, both Saturday and Sunday. We are always looking for people who are interested in serving at the pantry, M-F, 10A to noon. Pick the day that fits your schedule… You can help with hosting and escorting folks to their cars or, if you like to pray with people, there is always an opportunity for that. If you are a “techie” type person, you can always help with registering folks on the computer. We also bag groceries every Wednesday at 5:30P… it only takes an hour! (Did you know we provide groceries to nearly a thousand households EVERY MONTH in Greene and Montgomery counties??)
One last item, and this is very exciting… I’m happy to invite you to our Summer Splash Pool Party! Sunday, August 13th, 6:30P at the Adventure Reef Water Park (Kettering Rec Center). Enjoy hot dogs, snacks and ice cream. Bring your swimsuit, towel and flotation devices for a great night of fun and fellowship! (There will also be a cornhole tournament!) RSVP BY SUNDAY AUGUST 6th and get a FREE pair of Vineyard sunglasses! CLICK HERE TO RSVP.
I look forward to seeing you there!
P.S. Scott and his team of presenters were pretty excited about the turnout for the two sessions offered for Group Leader Training this past week. Over 20 people attended and are interested in leading or starting a group!
