Marcie and I are enjoying some vacation time… I hope you are able to get away this summer to refresh and recharge as well. I always enjoy spending time in the mountains, visiting with my family.
When I am away, I usually have a verse, a passage or a theme that I ponder in those quiet moments. As you know, we have been talking about the heroin crisis in our city. The verse I have been meditating on is Isaiah 54:17, “No weapon formed against us will prevail” (#NoWeapon). I believe in the power of prayer to effect change, and I also believe in doing practical things to make a difference. That’s why we are doing our Tools for School campaign and tutoring kids at our Hope and Discovery Center. It takes both prayer AND action to change things. (We will be receiving a special offering toward Tools for School in the next week or two.)
Please keep praying and asking God to intervene in our city. I am praying for the dealers to be saved (or apprehended) and for those who are addicted to be set free! Thank you for joining with me in this effort.
This weekend Caleb will be continuing our new series, Practical Wisdom, from the book of James. He is going to address the tension between the Apostle Paul’s writings in Romans about salvation through grace, and James’ writings about “faith without works is dead”. There is a place where grace and works meet. That tension is reflected as we pray and take practical steps to effect real change. It’s one thing to pray that God would provide for someone’s needs… It’s another thing to hand them a bag of groceries. Both are important!
I’d also like to take a moment to introduce to you our new Assistant Worship Leader, Drew Pinson. He and his wife, Addison, are coming to us from the Vineyard Church in Sullivan, IL., where Robbie Dawkins resides! (Addison is originally from Springfield, OH.) Drew will be coming alongside Scott in helping to develop worship, allowing Scott to focus more on developing our leadership culture, and stepping back into the speaking rotation with me and Caleb. Drew will be playing guitar this weekend then co-leading next weekend. Please make him and Addison feel welcome!
