This is Scott, filling in for Doug this week. Doug and Marcie are in Costa Rica taking some time off. They are also planning to meet up with Adam and Kelly Vaughan while they are there (If you are new to our church family, Adam was our Discipleship Pastor for a few years, until God called them to Costa Rica to be missionaries)! If you would like to check out their ministry, click on this link: www.thebackwardsmissionaries.com
A couple of days ago I also sent out a church-wide email regarding Doug’s State of the Church message he gave the weekend of January 9-10. He outlined our five goals for 2016. If for some reason you didn’t receive that email, here is a link to that message. You can listen to it on our website by clicking HERE.
One of our goals this year is to kick up the fellowship factor in our church. Another is to develop our Leader Community. These two goals are closely related. One is broader in hopes that we would all make an effort to get connected and get to know each other better. Developing our Leader Community is focused on purposefully connecting our leaders from each of our various areas of ministry. We all run on different tracks. What I mean is, if you lead (or serve) in children’s ministry, you may never cross paths with someone who is a leader or attends DSSM. If you are a leader in the women’s ministry, you may have never met the leaders from our outreaches. We are hoping to change that. This will give us the opportunity to share testimonies from each of our areas and encourage one another!
We are hosting a Leader Training/Refresher session Wednesday, February 3 at 7 PM in Studio L of the Family Life Center. This session is for those currently leading AND for those interested in leading (or hosting) a group. We will be covering leadership basics, philosophy and expectations for our leaders. This will be a mix of nuts and bolts, inspiration, and capturing the heart of leadership. If you would like to attend this training, email me at email@example.com. We would love to have you!
If you are already leading in some capacity, feel free to join us TONIGHT at 7 PM in the Lodge for our Leader Community gathering (Bring a dessert to share). We will worship, hang out together, share testimonies, and I’m going to throw out an idea to you. Our Leader Community will be meeting every 4-6 weeks as time and schedule allows.
I thought Caleb did a great job with the message last weekend. I really appreciate his straightforward, pragmatic approach to teaching the Bible. He is on again this weekend, sharing on the foundation of healthy communication: honor, respect and trust.
This passage from James 1 speaks directly to that theme, “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.”
I also wanted to let you know that our men’s and women’s ministries are slated to start February (24th) on Wednesday nights. The women will be studying “What Love Is” by Kelly Minter (there is also a Tuesday morning women’s group). The guys will be diving into “Honor Among Us” based upon Danny Silk’s book, “Culture of Honor.” We are also going to offer a series on Tuesday nights entitled, “Marriage for a Lifetime” in support of our new message series (we scheduled it on Tuesdays so as to not compete with Wednesdays men’s/women’s groups). Our Barnabas Generation (age 50+) fellowship series kicks off Saturday, February 13 at 10 AM.
More on these groups coming up in the next few weeks (we are currently in the process of updating our website with all of this information).
I look forward to seeing all of you again this weekend.
P.S. Feel free to email me with any questions you may have about our groups or Leader Community! firstname.lastname@example.org.
