I am looking forward to seeing all of you this weekend. Marcie and I spent some time in Colorado with family, then we attended the Vineyard national conference in Anaheim, California. It was good to be away, but it’s always good to be back home. I was around last weekend for our Pantry Open House. Many of you toured the pantry and we picked up a few new volunteers. Thank you for your support!
This weekend I am going to start a new series that is really a continuation of our DAVID series from earlier this year. There is so much we can learn from studying the life of David. This weekend, I am going to talk about real greatness… God measures greatness differently than the world measures greatness. He measures it over the long haul of our lives, not by our status, but by our service.
I have some good news for you! As you know, we have been praying about the heroin epidemic plaguing our community. I asked Scott to call Montgomery County Sheriff, Phil Plummer to see if there has been any change… When Scott spoke with him, he indicated that there was definitely a noticeable change in the stats for overdoses and deaths in the month of July! He noted that on average, ten people overdose every day in Montgomery County. He said while there were days that there were still as many as fifteen overdoses, “some days there were only two or three!”
Here is a chart that ran on whio.com yesterday verifying what the Sheriff indicated!
I like to keep score. I want to know how we are doing, if our prayers are having any effect. At this point, it appears that our prayers ARE having an effect on the number of overdoses. Let’s keep praying… I am hoping to see those numbers continue to trend downward!
This weekend, we will have a handout with practical steps we are taking to help fight this epidemic. For instance, we are hosting The Miami Valley Crime Prevention Association Community Engagement Conference, August 26 at our Beavercreek campus. For more information, CLICK HERE. Additionally, our staff is going to be trained to administer Narcan. I believe in prayer AND action.
This Sunday night (Aug 6) is our Back to School Fest, 5-7P at our Riverdale community site. We will be distributing school supplies to 600 kids! And our friends from Shoes4theShoeless will be with us fitting kids with new shoes!
